Territorial Defence Day: an army born of communities
On 5 October, Ukraine marks Territorial Defence Day — a recognition of the force that became a cornerstone of resistance in the first days of the full-scale invasion.
Origins
Territorial defence had existed as a concept in Ukraine before 2022, but it was the shock of Russia’s aggression that turned it into a nationwide force. Thousands of civilians — teachers, IT specialists, doctors, entrepreneurs — took up arms to defend their own towns and villages.
A symbol of local resilience
What makes the Territorial Defence unique is its deep link to local communities. It is an army grown from neighbourhoods: people fought for their streets, schools and neighbours. That level of trust and solidarity became one of Ukraine’s strongest advantages.
Their role today
The Territorial Defence Forces are now fully integrated into the Armed Forces of Ukraine. They perform combat missions, guard strategic sites, assist with logistics and support local order.
Conclusion
Territorial Defence Day honours those who proved that the army is not only a profession but also a civic duty. Their example is a reminder that the strength of a nation lies in the unity of its people.
