Female Veterans: Adapting Through Lens of Gender-Specific Needs
As Ukraine enters the third year of full-scale war, the number of female soldiers returning to civilian life continues to rise. Yet, their reintegration remains largely overlooked by state programmes. Rehabilitation initiatives are predominantly designed for men, failing to address the gender-specific challenges faced by female veterans.
Key Challenges in Reintegration
- Psychological Support
Like all soldiers, women veterans grapple with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, their experiences often come with additional psychological trauma: sexism, societal hostility, and a lack of community support. Ukraine's mental health infrastructure remains underfunded and ill-equipped to provide gender-sensitive care.
- Employment Barriers
Many female veterans must rebuild their careers from scratch. Yet, employment centres frequently funnel them into traditionally "female" roles, disregarding their military experience and leadership skills. Discrimination and a lack of reskilling opportunities make the transition even harder.
- Persistent Gender Biases
Despite fighting alongside men, women veterans are still undervalued and underestimated. Society often fails to recognise their contributions, viewing them as anomalies rather than equals. This bias hinders their social and professional reintegration.

- Public awareness campaigns to challenge stereotypes and elevate the recognition of women’s role in the military.
- Legislative advocacy to ensure equal access to rehabilitation, education, and employment opportunities.
